What happens when a girl has the brain of an 8-year-old and the body of a 13-year-old?

A sea change is underway among many of today’s girls: They are developing faster and entering puberty earlier than ever before. Just a generation ago, fewer than 5 percent of girls started puberty before the age of 8; today that percentage has more than doubled. Early puberty is not just a matter of physical transformation—it’s deeply psychological too, with effects that can put a girl at higher risk for behavioral problems as well as long-term health challenges such as obesity, depression, eating disorders, and even cancer.

Why is this happening, and what does it mean for our girls’ futures? What can we do to help lead them through this major transition to live happy and healthy lives?

In their groundbreaking book, The New Puberty, Louise Greenspan, MD, and Julianna Deardorff, PhD—two leading experts on the root causes and potential consequences of early puberty in girls—have written a reassuring and empowering guide that will forever change the way we view puberty and parent the next generation.

Drawing on original cutting-edge research and years of clinical experience, Drs. Greenspan and Deardorff explain why girls are developing earlier and identify both established and surprising triggers—from excess body fat and hormone-mimicking chemicals to emotional stressors in a girl’s home and family life. They offer highly practical strategies that can help prevent and manage early puberty, including how to limit exposures to certain ingredients in personal care and household products, which foods to eat and which to avoid, and ways to improve a child’s sleep routine to promote healthy biology. Moreover, the authors—both mothers of young girls—offer parents, teachers, coaches, and caretakers guidance to initiate and continue the conversation about puberty in an age-appropriate way in order to support girls as they navigate this complex stage of their lives.

Impeccably researched, engaging, and urgently needed, The New Puberty provides a roadmap to help young girls move forward with confidence, ensuring their future well-being.

Review :
Excellent Resource for early puberty
The focus of the New Puberty book is early development in girls - with examples as young as 5 year old hitting puberty (but mostly geared at the 8-9 year range). Yet ideally this is also a book for parents with young girls who haven't started showing puberty signs yet to give them an idea of what to look for and some insight into why the modern girl is hitting puberty so much earlier/younger than her predecessors. The book is extremely informative and ideal for both parents (written in a friendly and accessible way) and practitioners (many recent studies are published and put together). As a parent, I look for these types of books to be informative and yet not have all the answers - I don't want another 'fad' or narrowminded perspective on parenting. What I do need is to know what recent findings there are and have those put into perspective of our past approaches to dealing with girls hitting puberty (earlier or otherwise).

The book is broken down as follows : Part 1:...
Superb!
An expertly written book by true experts. It is written for the layman, but as a physician I find it very valuable. Everyone raising girls should own it.

Read this book if you have daughters!
As a mom of preteen daughters, I found this book to be insightful, informative and also practical. I wish I had this book when my daughters were younger! I especially loved all the practical information offered in Chapter 5- How to manage environmental risks and Chapter 8- Don't have the "talk", start the conversation. If you have daughters, this is a "must have" book to add to your parenting library.

Finally a well-designed textbook
I have not used this textbook in school yet, but I have thumbed through it and I am very excited about it. It is beautiful and the organization is great. Key terms are always in blue in the main text and the definition is at the bottom of the page like a footnote - there if you need it, out of the way if you don't. Informational extras and tables are color coded and easy to find. So far it looks very thorough but an easy read. I have had textbooks that didn't have the key terms in the index but had seemingly irrelevant topics listed, but this book has a very thorough index which is a plus! Also, it is very modern and clean looking. I doubt I will spend half of my study time being frustrated by the book like I have in the past.

Book
The book was almost like it was said to be. I didnt read close enough before buying put it was a binder book. Book is in good condition for being used, and save me A LOT of money. It came to my house on the date it said. Thanks for saving me money.

Great Book
I had to get this book for a child development class that I'm taking. I really like the way the chapters are presented. It's easy to read and very informative.

From leading authorities, this state-of-the-art manual presents the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM), the first comprehensive, empirically tested intervention specifically designed for toddlers and preschoolers with autism. Supported by the principles of developmental psychology and applied behavior analysis, ESDM’s intensive teaching interventions are delivered within play-based, relationship-focused routines. The manual provides structured, hands-on strategies for working with very young children in individual and group settings to promote development in such key domains as imitation; communication; social, cognitive, and motor skills; adaptive behavior; and play.

Implementing individualized treatment plans for each child requires the use of an assessment tool, the Early Start Denver Model Curriculum Checklist for Young Children with Autism. A nonreproducible checklist is included in the manual for reference, along with instructions for use; 8½" x 11" checklists are sold separately in sets of 15 ready-to-use booklets.

Excellent Resource for Professionals!
This is an excellent intervention model that combines the best of developmental and naturalistic behavioral models for children with autism. The books is very well written and provides clear descriptions of the intervention components and methodologies. The flow charts to assist practiioners with understanding how to individualize the program for children who may need more support are especially helpful. The authors provide a theoretical framework and informamtion regarding reserach into the model and then the following chapters offer specific steps involved in conducting an appropriate assessment, developing clear, measurable goals and implementing the intervention to meet those goals. Specific instructions for targettng core features of autism in very young children, like imiation and joint attention, are outlined in detail. Practioners can use this manual to develop a program that meets children's IFSP needs/goals and to measure progress along the way. I highly recommend this...
Lots of joint attention material.
Generally I use the VB-MAPP, and it's been fantastic, but I have found some domains of the assessment more difficult to use as a curriculum guide, specifically social skills. This assessment. Which is also criterion-based, breaks down how to teach joint attention skills and early social skills like responding to gestures. I read it over the weekend and got so excited to update my programs with all the fun material. One thing I thought was odd-- it's criterion referenced to children with autism, not neurotypical development, so if you are attempting to approximate typical development, you'll need to cross reference it somehow.

Also, it seemed to have a bit of an identity crisis. Parents reviewing it said it is too technical, but I needed it to be more technical and have more research behind it. It makes assertions that aren't supported by the body of evidence, which is really frustrating. However, it is still very useful as supplement to lesson planning for behavioral...
Nothing New Here, Move Along
I currently have my child enrolled in RDI, have taken the More Than Words program, and employed Floortime techniques to interact with my ASD child. So I was really hoping that this book would provide me with more ideas on play based or relationship based therapies. I was really disappointed that this book was more of a theoretical view of autism and how they conducted their study. In fact, the book states that the kids in the study had to meet a certain set of skills before their techniques could be employed. You really can't use their techniques on every child in the autism spectrum (their website states it is targeted for ages 14mos - 3 yrs). Their study even includes a child who can already imitate at 18 months. Are their techniques more for higher functioning ASD children? It kind of makes me wonder.

Now about their techniques, it's just about alternating sessions of ABA and play/social based interactions with the parents (sounds like Floortime or Son Rise to...

Review :
Useful everyday
This book was recommended to us when we received a probable diagnosis but it would take time before getting the evaluations needed to start therapy. It's very easy to read and offers useful strategies to engage your ASD child immediately. It has totally changed the way we interact with our son. Everyday activities like playing with toys, playing outside, mealtime, bath time, etc can be used to encourage your child to interact with others.

A good starting point
This book pointed me in the right direction, my son has light autism and it seems to be getting less so due to ABA Therapy, more social play & a slight change in diet.
One thing you need to know if you have a child that displays these tendencies is to relax, spend time playing with social toys with him, teach him to make eye contact with you, touch is very helpful, and don't rush looking for results. They will come.
This book just helped me get in a good mind set. As a parent you worry about your child‘s life experience and that is where stress enters the picture. Remember as a parent that getting a game plan together like Therapy & setting aside social play time will empower you and take away some of your stress.

Order one for everyone in your child's life!
I found this book to be extremely informative with real life ways to help your child make progress with their ability to communicate, sustain joint attention, and begin back and forth interactions! I only wish I had read it earlier! I can't say enough nice things about the progress my son has been making with the activities mentioned in this book!
