A Required and Invaluable Textbook For Preparing Educators and So Much More!
This book as well as the previous edition is one of two main textbooks required for obtaining an certificate and license in Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) at Hamline University in St. Paul, MN. Chapters from this book, fit the philosophy and rigor of 6 different courses. Not only is it designed for university students, it is an invaluable resource for those in the field as well as parents of individuals with ASD. The fact that chapters are written by individuals with direct experience as well as those with ASD, makes it a relevant and invaluable resource. The added chapters in the second edition bring in evidence based practices in a meaningful way. A chapter on emotional regulation provides students, practitioners and parents with key information and strategies to support individuals with these skill deficits. Finally an additional chapter on how to use an individual's special interests in the classroom might be the "Golden Key" to success for many individuals and may...

The first chapter does not seem to be in the right place, perhaps it should have been moved to the end of the book, - as it assumes knowledge that is only gained through later chapters. The rest of the book is well-written and informative. I give it 2 stars because the first chapter seems overly biased and begins the learning experience with the authors trying to persuade the reader, instead of transmitting unbiased information.

I just received my copy of the Second Edition of Learners on the Autism Spectrum. I used the first edition as the text for the Introduction and Overview of ASD course at Hamline University since it was first published. The diversity of contributions from experts in the field represented in the book made it a wonderful introductory text and resource for educators in the field. Th ere are a number of highlights of the second edition I find particularly valuable. The second edition came at the perfect time. Tony Atwood clearly explains the new DSM-V and guides readers through changes from DSM-IV. It is important the editors addressed the topic of Evidence Based Practices in the first chapter, encouraging readers to learn and apply these practices but also challenges readers to recognize limitations. I also especially appreciated the new chapter on Emotional Regulation, a series of skills which are both a struggle for so many of our students and challenge for educators to...
