From celebrated children’s-food author Lisa Barnes, Cooking for Baby is a fully illustrated, gorgeous, four-color book that takes parents through the basics of preparing nutritious, delicious (and easy!) meals for your child, from six to eighteen months.

Parents today know that one of the best ways to give a baby a great start in life is with wholesome, homemade foods. While ready-made baby food is a convenience that any new parent can appreciate, feeding everyday fresh foods is the best way to teach a child healthy eating habits and an appreciation for good food from the cradle onward.

The eighty recipes in Cooking for Baby make preparing delicious meals for babies and toddlers a breeze, even for busy parents. The recipes are organized by age, showing how to introduce cereal grains and simple vegetable and fruit purees to your infant at six months, how to move on to chunkier foods by eight or nine months, and how to graduate to real meals for young toddlers of twelve to eighteen months to enjoy along with the entire family. When you see how easy it is, with a few smart tips on preparation and storage, you’ll never go back to the jars.

With Cooking for Baby, your youngster will enjoy a wide variety of fresh and interesting foods for a very happy and healthy beginning.

cooking for baby
This book has great recipes, and it's well written. What I like the most about this book is that it starts simple with one-ingredient purees, and gradually introduces recipes that have more texture and use the same ingredients that the baby has already had. Before each section of the book (e.g., 6 months, 7-8 months, 9-11 months, etc), there is some good information about food choices, textures, quantities, and similar, that I found useful... I have read many baby food books, and I believe that this one is one of the better ones. Highly recommend it.

Destined to become a classic!
This book should be given to all new parents! Excellent organization according to baby age, easy-to-read format, beautiful photos. Includes great lists such as what foods are easiest for baby to digest, which foods might cause gas, and which foods are best introduced when baby is a bit older. Great tips on storing and freezing food. Love that each recipe has side notes about specific foods. This is the best common-sense, organic, healthy approach to feeding your child...don't hesitate to buy it!

Great Recipes
I bought this book since I was planning to cook at home for my daughter and I needed some ideas. This book is excellent for the following reasons:

- Separates food introduction by ages:
6 months
7-8 months
9-11 months
12-18 months

- Recipes are simple to follow(believe me I am not an expert on cooking and I was able to make it) and above all they are healthy.

- Tips on food introduction, finger foods and alerts on possible food allergies.

The recipes are really yummy and I even tried some of the recipes myself.

Hawaiian Puff-Wheels

My daughter loves finding these in her lunchbox. She says they are fancy and delicious. The variations are endless, so this one recipe can yield many happy lunchboxes for years to come.

Yield

4 or 5 servings.

Directions

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C), and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. On a lightly floured surface, unroll the pastry sheets. Spread the ham and pineapple evenly over both sheets. Sprinkle with the cheese. Carefully roll the dough, starting with the long side so that you end up with a long log. Cut the filled dough into 1-inch (2.5 cm) thick pieces, and place on the baking sheet. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes until the dough rises and is golden. Remove from the oven, and allow the wheels to cool for 5 minutes prior to packing in a lunchbox. If you make these the night before, pack them chilled in the lunchbox. They will be room temperature by lunch.

Ingredients
  • 1 package (17 ounces, or 490 g) puff pastry sheets, thawed
  • 3/4 cup (112 g) sliced deli ham, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup (80 g) crushed pineapple, well drained
  • 1 1/4 cups (145 g) shredded Cheddar cheese

Real Food, Real Fun, Real Easy
Laura Fuentes takes the hum drum out of school lunches with this book. There are no strange ingredients that you can't find at the grocery store. You don't have to have all those expensive kitchen tools and feel guilty if you don't cut your sandwiches into cute stars or anything. Using these recipes, lunch can be fun AND easy!

Everything is laid out in a clear, concise manner. There is a little intro telling you where the idea for each recipe originated, giving them a personal touch that I find appealing. At the end of the book, I was surprised to find a chart with the recipe names and a place for kids to rate each one. Pure. Genius. Now I can easily see which ones were favorites and we can mark whether we want to make it again or not. Getting the kids involved in planning lunches is SO KEY.

I am a homeschooling mom of 3, and I would get to a point in the day where I would stare at the refrigerator and say "what am I going to give these kids for...

Looks awesome.. but I'm clueless on some things!
Got this book yesterday... and loving all the recipes I see! So excited to try them!

My only comment is that I would like to have seen a comment(1-3 sentences) per each recipe regarding instructions how to freeze/defost/pack (especially the sandwiches).

How do the avocados not turn brown and mushy after all morning in the lunchbox? How do the apple slices not turn brown? I'm really clueless about that stuff:)

Everything else look beautiful and wonderful! Looking forward to the next book!
