Review :
Excellent resource for parents of teens with ADHD or ADD
As a clinical psychologist I regard this as one of the best resources for parents of teens. This helps parents to look at the teen with ADHD as having some executive skills impairments that need remediation and understanding. Parents also rate their own executive skills and can try to be a better fit in parenting these adolescents. There are many constructive suggestions in this book and I highly recommend it.

Great Book! Excellent insight into the struggles your teen may be facing.
Smart but Scattered Teens is a must for any proud parent of a teen coping with a learning disability. Unlike many similar books, it presents information and suggestions in a real-life, applicable manner. The authors present the material in an organized, readable, fashion, where a parent (or even a teen, for that matter) could read the book from cover to cover, or select individual sections most applicable to their situation.

The book also contains several hypothetical situations that many teens may find themselves in (think of speeding in a car). It then contains some interesting reactions, both from professionals and from real life teens, on how to respond, learn, and grow based on from such experiences.

Ultimately, if your teen could use a little, or a lot, of help developing the executive skills necessary to succeed in life, this book is for you.

A+

Excellent look at the unusual child
I have a kid who's gifted & in gifted classes. Understands high level concepts, but can't figure out how to organize his locker or manage to turn in his homework - even though he's completed it. It's been bandied about maybe he has autism or ADD, but those didn't fit. This book describes him to a T. Not having the frontal lobe of his brain maturing at the same rate as his peers is a simple, logical explanation & the ensuing ways to deal are enlightening & helpful. This book was a god-send. It was suggested by his gifted teacher after she spent time with him.

Great for Parents
I noticed that a lot of reviews were written by special ed teachers and psychologists, and wanted to add mine as a parent. This book FINALLY shed light on the challenges my son faces at home and school. It not only gave me concrete tools and ideas to help him strengthen his executive skills, but also an understanding of what was going on, which led to more patience on my part. Nagging him to get organized and constantly reminding him to stay on task was not helping. His executive skill weaknesses were beginning to lead to low self-esteem and a "better not to try than to fail" attitude. This book has helped me to begin turning that around. It was recommended to me by a psychologist. If anyone has ever hinted that your child might be ADHD-- read this book before accepting any labels.

Facing my own weaknesses in helping my children
Another parent here. I have three highly gifted kids who nevertheless seem unable to accomplish simple tasks. A friend recommended this book, and it's forcing me to endure a complete paradigm shift, not only about my expectations for them, but of my own weaknesses in this area. Sure, I've had trouble staying organized, I start tasks only to leave them half-completed, and I feel like I have far more potential than I produce. But until I took the inventory for parents in this book, I didn't realize how truly weak my own executive skills are all around (unless I'm inspired, and then I'm a machine! ... just like my daughter). My husband took the quiz and -- not surprisingly -- his EF (executive function) skills are nearly off the charts on the other end. He laughed a little as he said he wondered how honest I was going to be, but he agreed with my self-assessment. Suddenly, I understand why a disastrous house sends me into tears, but he can get to work and make it spotless in a couple...

I have suffered from ADD as well and have taken medication such as Adderall and recently started using a supplement called Adderdrene Adderdrene XR - Scientifically Formulated to Increase Brain Function, Mental Focus, Memory, and Provides Immediate and Long-Lasting Energy! to help with my ADD, it really helps to keep my mind focused and helps me make it through the work day. Essential reading for any parent, teacher, therapist, or caregiver of a person with autism: a groundbreaking book on autism, by one of the world’s leading experts, who portrays autism not as a tragic disability, but as a unique way of being human.

Autism is usually portrayed as a checklist of deficits, including difficulties interacting socially, problems in communicating, sensory challenges, and repetitive behavior patterns. This perspective leads to therapies focused on ridding individuals of “autistic” symptoms. Now Dr. Barry M. Prizant, an internationally renowned autism expert, offers a new and compelling paradigm: the most successful approaches to autism don’t aim at fixing a person by eliminating symptoms, but rather seeking to understand the individual’s experience and what underlies the behavior.

In Uniquely Human, Dr. Prizant suggests a major shift in understanding autism: Instead of classifying “autistic” behaviors as signs of pathology, he sees them as part of a range of strategies to cope with a world that feels chaotic and overwhelming. Rather than curb these behaviors, it’s better to enhance abilities, build on strengths, and offer supports that will naturally lead to more desirable behavior and a better quality of life. In fact, argues Dr. Prizant, attempts to eliminate “autistic” behaviors may actually interfere with important developmental processes.

While it never discounts the difficulties of living with autism, Uniquely Human offers inspiring stories, and practical advice drawn from Dr. Prizant’s four-decade career working in universities, schools, hospitals, and in private practice. It conveys a deep respect for people with autism and the qualities that make them special. Filled with humanity and wisdom, Uniquely Human offers a compassionate and insightful perspective that parents, professionals, and family members will find uplifting and hopeful.

Review :
A uniquely human book
Humane, sensitive, respectful. I enjoyed especially the section on listening; so poignant with wonderful examples and such a key and under attended to concept to write about in this context, and the section on emotional memory. Wisdom to learn from and celebrate throughout.

Must-read about autism and about all humanity!
I love this book. It's a must-read for any parent, educator, caregiver, family member, friend or anyone touched by autism (and special needs, too). This is paradigm-shifting in every way, beautifully written by a brilliant author.

Uniquely Human - Sharing Knowledge and Wisdom
The world is a better place when people with knowledge and wisdom share their intellect and experiences. Uniquely Human is a must-read for parents, siblings, grandparents, care givers and professionals who are toiling daily in the trenches of life with loved ones enduring the complexities of autism. Dr. Prizant provides a wealth of information on autism in an understandable format, delivered with warmth and humanity. If you are one of the many seeking insight into a field that has defied easy explanations and solutions – this book if for you. (Arnold S. Hawaiian Puff-Wheels

My daughter loves finding these in her lunchbox. She says they are fancy and delicious. The variations are endless, so this one recipe can yield many happy lunchboxes for years to come.

Yield

4 or 5 servings.

Directions

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C), and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. On a lightly floured surface, unroll the pastry sheets. Spread the ham and pineapple evenly over both sheets. Sprinkle with the cheese. Carefully roll the dough, starting with the long side so that you end up with a long log. Cut the filled dough into 1-inch (2.5 cm) thick pieces, and place on the baking sheet. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes until the dough rises and is golden. Remove from the oven, and allow the wheels to cool for 5 minutes prior to packing in a lunchbox. If you make these the night before, pack them chilled in the lunchbox. They will be room temperature by lunch.

Ingredients
  • 1 package (17 ounces, or 490 g) puff pastry sheets, thawed
  • 3/4 cup (112 g) sliced deli ham, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup (80 g) crushed pineapple, well drained
  • 1 1/4 cups (145 g) shredded Cheddar cheese

Real Food, Real Fun, Real Easy
Laura Fuentes takes the hum drum out of school lunches with this book. There are no strange ingredients that you can't find at the grocery store. You don't have to have all those expensive kitchen tools and feel guilty if you don't cut your sandwiches into cute stars or anything. Using these recipes, lunch can be fun AND easy!

Everything is laid out in a clear, concise manner. There is a little intro telling you where the idea for each recipe originated, giving them a personal touch that I find appealing. At the end of the book, I was surprised to find a chart with the recipe names and a place for kids to rate each one. Pure. Genius. Now I can easily see which ones were favorites and we can mark whether we want to make it again or not. Getting the kids involved in planning lunches is SO KEY.

I am a homeschooling mom of 3, and I would get to a point in the day where I would stare at the refrigerator and say "what am I going to give these kids for...

Get Out the Door: Breakfast to Go – 11 Awesome Portable Morning Meals from Perfect Pancakes to Breakfast Burritos...
Looks awesome.. but I'm clueless on some things!
Got this book yesterday... and loving all the recipes I see! So excited to try them!

My only comment is that I would like to have seen a comment(1-3 sentences) per each recipe regarding instructions how to freeze/defost/pack (especially the sandwiches).

How do the avocados not turn brown and mushy after all morning in the lunchbox? How do the apple slices not turn brown? I'm really clueless about that stuff:)

Everything else look beautiful and wonderful! Looking forward to the next book!

Review :
disappointed, of no use for inattentive (non-hyper) ADD, very basic
I am really disappointed. This book was supposed to be the "go to" resource for all things ADHD. Unfortunately, it is really focused on hyperactivity and bad behavior. I endured a large part of the book before he notes that inattentive ADHD is not covered by the book, but for a brief blurb where he posits inattentive ADD(nonhyper) is really "sluggish cognitive tempo"-his theory really doesn't fit my child at all.
One pro is that he does provide a very thorough rebuttal to common misconceptions like "ADHD didn't exist before now, doesn't exist in other countries, is caused by diet or tv" etc.
But, it is also not an engaging read, and as another reviewer stated a lot of it is really basic parenting-"make sure to notice your kid being good," "take time for yourself," etc.
I had checked out the Book "Driven to Distraction" before buying this. It was infinitely better, in my opinion. It covered both hyper and nonhyperactive...
Extremely Helpful To Better Understand My Child
I never felt like the diagnosis of ADHD described my child very well. It seems like his problems with every day functioning and social interaction were just to exhausting and extreme. I never knew if I should be strict and firm or show him extra patience and more compassion, but one thing was for sure, nothing seemed to make it better or help me understand him any better-until I read this book. This book really gives you a framework for how to look at your child and better understand why ADHD can be so all-consuming and affect so many areas of you and your child's life. I would highly recommend this book for anyone struggling to understand ADHD better and help their child with ADHD. If you feel like things are so bad that you might be losing your relationship with your child this book WILL help. It's also a great everything you need to know guide even if your experience with ADHD isn't as severe as mine has been.

Still a superior resource for parents and teachers
As a parent I have returned to this resource again and again (previous edition). This updated version is worth the investment. As a teacher I have recommended this book to parents and other teachers who have found it very helpful. Appropriate for anyone interested in what ADHD is and what can be done to support a family coping with it. Although there is a section on medication with up-to-date research, the bulk of this book is about behavioral, organizational, educational and family dynamic support. This includes sections for young children through the teen years. Highly recomended!

A groundbreaking book that upends conventional thinking about autism and suggests a broader model for acceptance, understanding, and full participation in society for people who think differently.

What is autism? A lifelong disability, or a naturally occurring form of cognitive difference akin to certain forms of genius? In truth, it is all of these things and more—and the future of our society depends on our understanding it. WIRED reporter Steve Silberman unearths the secret history of autism, long suppressed by the same clinicians who became famous for discovering it, and finds surprising answers to the crucial question of why the number of diagnoses has soared in recent years.

Going back to the earliest days of autism research and chronicling the brave and lonely journey of autistic people and their families through the decades, Silberman provides long-sought solutions to the autism puzzle, while mapping out a path for our society toward a more humane world in which people with learning differences and those who love them have access to the resources they need to live happier, healthier, more secure, and more meaningful lives.

Along the way, he reveals the untold story of Hans Asperger, the father of Asperger’s syndrome, whose “little professors” were targeted by the darkest social-engineering experiment in human history; exposes the covert campaign by child psychiatrist Leo Kanner to suppress knowledge of the autism spectrum for fifty years; and casts light on the growing movement of "neurodiversity" activists seeking respect, support, technological innovation, accommodations in the workplace and in education, and the right to self-determination for those with cognitive differences.

Being a teen or tween isn't easy for anyone -- but it's especially tough for Asperkids. I know. I was one, I taught a whole bunch, and I am going to be raising three! That's also why I know that Asperkdis deserve their very own guide to all of the hidden social rules that are awfully confusing to us, even if they seem obvious to everyone else. "The Asperkids' (Secret) Rule Book of Social Rules." This isn't your momma's Emily Post, and there is no "don't do this" finger-wagging or patronizing "high and mighty preaching" here. Instead, the "Secret" Book gives Asperkids (aged 10-17) respectful, funny insights written "for Aspies by an Aspie." Chock full of illustrations, logic and even a practice session or six (in comic strip style, thank you very much!), this is the handbook every adult Aspie wishes we'd had growing up, but never did.

Review :
Best "how to" book for an Aspie kid!
Of all the books about Asperger's that I own, this is the only one with "how to" information for the child. I bought this book a couple of months ago for my 11 year old son who has Asperger's. We read one chapter together each night and both learn from it. We even reference it when he comes home from school after a "bad day" and look up how he could have handled the situation differently. I would recommend this book to any one who has an asperger child in the pre-teen to tween age.

Great book not just for our Aspie kids, but any child with social struggles
At first glance, this book looks terrific for kids with Aspergers, but also for any kids, including gifted kids, who need a little help understanding the social expectations of life.

Here's what one parent of a gifted child who also struggles socially has to say...

"The Asperkid's Secret Book of Social Rules" is like the answer to my prayers. My son has not been diagnosed as Asperger's, and he lacks some key characteristics, but this book is EXACTLY the book I've wished existed for helping him navigate social situations, etc. It is direct, funny and easy to read and doesn't "sugar coat" the dynamics of tweens and teens. I am giving it to him this afternoon and will report back, but if you haven't seen this book and have a kid that struggles with how to "fit in" or exhibits behaviors that make you say "WHAT makes him think that was a good idea to do/say!?!" it's worth checking out!

Thanks to the parents of Hoagies' Gifted Education Page for this great...
A Book for Asperkid Teens, Tweens & honestly, Aspies & Caregivers of ALL ages!
I was honored to have the opportunity to read an advance copy of the book.

Not only is The Asperkid's Secret Book of Social Rules a book for Asperkid teens and tweens, it is also a book for their parents, caregivers and for anyone who grew up Aspie and wants to understand themselves and the world around them better. Being undiagnosed until in my 40s, this is the book I wish I had when I was a teenager. Thank you Jennifer, for not only making these social rules no longer 'secret' but for helping create a social survival guide that helps promote acceptance, enrichment, inspiration and empowerment for Asperkids everywhere!
